A while ago in Wellington, students received rat traps to fight rats and to prevent birdlife from dying. There were rats everywhere. On Saturday they visited a house of a student saying that there was a rat in the kitchen also complaining that rats were in their walls. They gave 13 traps to flats around the city and now tenants are competing for monthly prizes like, new clothes, coffee and New World Vouchers depending how many they caught. The trap is designed with a sign on the side and was made with wood. They gave rat traps to everyone. Pic’s Peanut Butter Sponsored the bait.

The Dog That Can Do CPR
July 3rd, A very skilled dog performed CPR on a patient! Poncho the dog had been trained to perform CPR using his paws. cardiopulmonary resuscitation short for CPR involves to press down on someone’s chest if they are unconscious so that they try to restart their heart. He was also trained to check a pulse by putting his ear to his patient’s chest.

πŸŒ‘πŸŒ‘ Wow! The Blood Moon Appeared In New Zealand! πŸŒ‘πŸŒ‘

Kiwi Kids News

As part of our independent reading programme we use Kiwikidsnews to learn about news in New Zealand (national news) and around the world (international news).
We are learning how to:  Read closely to analyse an article and to think critically about the messages within them.

1) In your own words describe what happened in this news article.

On July 28th, the blood moon appeared in New Zealand and it lasted one hour and 43 minutes. The moon started to enter the earth’s shadow, the penumbra around 5:15 am. The moon turns to red from the blue light on the earth’s atmosphere making a ray of sunlight to the moon.

2) Find out where this event took place and include some information about this place.

This took place in New Zealand. New Zealand is a country located in the region Oceania. The capital city of New Zealand is Wellington since 1865 at the North Island. Auckland is known for the Sky Tower. The Sky tower is about 328 metres and it is the highest building in Aotearoa New Zealand. Auckland was the second capital city 1841-1865 before Wellington. Okiato was the first capital city of New Zealand 1840-1841.

3) Tell us when this event happened and explain what might happen in the future.

This event happened on July 28th and I predict that the Blood Moon will appear again in the next 20 years in New Zealand.

4) Explain in your own words why this event took place.
Whenever the sun is next to earth and the moon is in the other side, the moon reflects to the sun’s light and the moon shines red. The moon facing New Zealand makes us see the blood moon in the blue sky.

5)  Find the meaning of 3 words from the article.

Refracting-Making (a ray of light) that changes directions whenever it changes angles.
