SLJ Wk 1, Day 1, Activity 1: Setting Sail

DAY 1: EXPLORERS

Activity 1: Setting Sail [4 points]

People from Pacific nations have always been expert explorers and navigators. In the past, they used the stars, sun and ocean swells to find their way (navigate) around the Pacific Ocean. Master navigator, Nainoa Thompson, has used the ancient Polynesian wayfinding skills to navigate around the world. In 2013, Nainoa led a crew across the Pacific Ocean on two large canoes (Hokule’a and Hikianalia). The crew stopped off in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2015 on their journey and visited the Manaiakalani Schools in Auckland.

Here is a short video about Polynesian navigation. It describes the different ways ancient Polynesian navigators used the natural world to find their way around vast oceans. Incredible!

I think that it would be difficult to be ‘at sea’ for weeks at a time. I would miss my family but I would also enjoy the adventure. Let’s imagine that you were invited to join Nainoa for three weeks at sea. As part of the journey, you have to pack your own food.

For this activity, make a list of ten food items that you could take with you. Please think carefully about what you will take as you won’t have access to a refrigerator or freezer while at sea. Please explain why you would select each item.

On your blog, post your list of 10 food items you would take on an ocean voyage and the reasons why you chose these items.

  1. Kia ora Anamaria,

It is lovely meeting you! I am so excited that you are joining us for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-2020. Have you done this programme before?

This is my first year joining the Summer Learning Journey, and I am so excited that I get to read over the Manaiakalani blogs.

I’m really looking forward to summer, aren't you? In my spare time I like spending time at the beach and hanging out with my friends. I also enjoy going for walks and I absolutely love cooking and baking. What are you looking forward to doing this summer?

I liked the way you presented your 10 food items you would take on an ocean voyage. Your presentation looks fantastic! I especially liked how you explained how each food item could be used. You definitely showed critical thinking. Ka pai.

What would happen if you couldn't bring a chilly bin on the voyage for the meat? Do you have any other alternative ideas for what you would do with the produce?

I think out of all the food on the list you mentioned I would definitely take fruit. There are so many different types of fruit you could take as well so you wouldn't get sick of it.

If you had to take only one type of food from your top 10 with you on a voyage, what would you choose?

    Noho ora mai

  2. Hi Erica, I have done this program a couple of times before, I think this is my 2nd time doing it. I thought about what I would do with the meat maybe smoking it? but I wouldn't know how to cook it so I think meat is not a very good to bring on a voyage. If water counts I think i'll take water because you can survive 3-4 weeks with no food to eat and only drinking water. Thank you for commenting on my blog.

  3. Kia ora Anamaria,

Thanks for your reply! That's great you're getting involved for another year. The activities are so fun and creative I absolutely love reading how everyone is getting along. Do you enjoy reading other blog posts? :)

Water definitely counts, and I think you're onto something smart! Water would never go off, and I couldn't imagine going on a long voyage without any water.

    Have a great day! :)

  4. Kia ora Anamaria.

You make such pretty posts!! Gosh I hadn't even thought of bringing any drinks. If you could only take 5 of those items with you, what would they be?

    Looking forward to your response,
    Riiana
